The 10 best recipe apps of October 2026
Ranked by how well each app answers the question you open it with: what can I cook? Each entry says what the app does best and where it falls short, and every fact links to the app’s own website or store listing. Nobody paid to be on this list, and none of the links to other apps earn us anything.
As of October 2026. Facts checked October 5, 2026.

1. Souva (ours)
Best for cooking from what you already have
If the question is what to cook tonight, start here. Souva begins with the food already in your kitchen and works out what it can become.
- Starts from your kitchen. Souva searches real recipes from across the web and ranks them by how much of each one your pantry already covers, with an honest list of anything you are missing.1,2
- Fills the pantry from a photo or a receipt. Its store listings name four ways to get a kitchen in: a photo of your ingredients, a barcode, a grocery receipt, or typing.1,2
- Writes a recipe when nothing fits. When nothing published fits, SouvAI writes a new recipe from exactly what is on your shelves.1,2
- Not a subscription. Nothing in it is behind a paywall. Every feature is in the free app, with a daily or weekly allowance on the four that call an AI model, and an optional short ad tops up most of them. The one purchase, Souva Unlimited, is $4.99 once, not a subscription: it removes the ads and raises those allowances, and unlocks nothing the free app lacks.1,13
- No account. There is no account to make, and the pantry never leaves your phone.1
- Still shipping. Souva is in active development: both stores show an update on August 27, 2026.1,2 Not every app in this category still is. SuperCook’s Android app was last updated on October 16, 2025, and its iPhone app on June 15, 2022.14,15 MyFridgeFood, a free check-off-what-you-have recipe finder, has not had an App Store update since February 3, 2023.16
- Built for
- One question, what to cook tonight. For a lifetime recipe collection kept in sync across devices, or a month of planned dinners, Paprika and Samsung Food are built for those jobs.
2. Paprika
Best for keeping and organizing the recipes you already love
If you already have a recipe collection, Paprika is the best home for it: it is built around the collection, and it has been refined for years.
- Paprika keeps your recipes in categories, saves new ones from any website through its built-in browser, plans meals on daily, weekly, or monthly calendars, and builds grocery lists sorted by aisle.3,4
- Cloud sync keeps your recipes, lists, and meal plans the same on every device, and there are versions for iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows.3
- It even has a pantry that tracks which ingredients you have and when they expire.4
3. NYT Cooking
Best for a big library of tested recipes
For browsing toward something new, recipes written and tested by one kitchen beat a search of the whole web. It is a better place than Souva to look for an idea.
- NYT Cooking has thousands of recipes, says it tests every one of them, and publishes new recipes and videos every day, from cooks including Samin Nosrat and Ina Garten.5
- Cost
- Unlimited access to NYT Cooking’s recipes takes a New York Times Cooking subscription.5
- Falls short
- The full library is behind a subscription, and it does not start from what you have.
4. AnyList
Best for a grocery list the whole household shares
The shared list is the center of the app rather than a feature added to a recipe app, and it shows.
- AnyList shares one grocery list with a partner or roommates, and items checked off show up in real time while someone shops.6
- It also keeps a recipe box and a meal plan the whole household can see.6
- Cost
- There is a free plan, and AnyList Complete is $9.99 a year for one person or $14.99 a year for a household.17
- Falls short
- It will not tell you what to cook from what is already in the cupboard.
5. Samsung Food
Best for planning the week for free
It does the whole loop, from saved recipe to weekly plan to shopping list, without asking for money first.
- Samsung Food saves any recipe from any website, plans your week, turns the plan into a shopping list, and shares both with family or friends.7
- It is the app that used to be called Whisk.18
- Samsung Food also searches its 240,000-plus public recipes by ingredient, for free.7
- Cost
- Samsung Food is free on iPhone, iPad, and the web, and a paid tier, Samsung Food+, adds AI-personalized weekly meal plans.7
- Falls short
- A plan starts from what you mean to cook, not from what is already in the fridge.
6. ReciMe
Best for saving recipes from TikTok and Instagram
A recipe in a video is the hardest kind to keep, and this is the app whose listing leads with keeping it.
7. Cooklist
Best for a pantry that fills itself from your store loyalty card
It is the closest app here to Souva’s idea, a pantry first and recipes from it, and filling that pantry from a loyalty card is something Souva cannot do.
- Cooklist connects to your grocery store loyalty cards, at Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, Wegmans, and 75 more stores, and downloads your food purchases into a digital pantry automatically.9
- It matches over a million recipes to that pantry, tracks how old each item is, and puts only the missing ingredients on the shopping list.9
- Falls short
- Its automatic pantry depends on shopping at a store it connects to; Souva reads a photo or a receipt from anywhere instead.
8. Tasty
Best for learning a dish from a video
If you learn by watching, a short video of each step is worth more than any amount of text.
- Tasty, from BuzzFeed, has more than 10,000 recipes with video and a step-by-step cooking mode, plus tips and ratings from its community on every recipe.10
- Its ingredient search suggests dishes from as few as three ingredients you have on hand.10
- Falls short
- Its ingredient search answers from its own library, not from the rest of the web, and it does not keep a pantry for you.
9. BigOven
Best for a million recipes and your handwritten cards in one place
It is a long-running all-rounder, and turning a stained recipe card into text is a small kindness nobody else on this list offers.
- BigOven has a library of more than a million recipes, clips recipes from other sites, and transcribes a handwritten recipe from a photo.11
- It also plans meals by day, week, or month, keeps a grocery list the household can share, and its free Use Up Leftovers tool suggests recipes from up to three ingredients you have.11
- Falls short
- Its leftovers tool takes up to three ingredients; it is a lookup, not a pantry that remembers your kitchen.
10. SuperCook
Best for searching by ingredient in a browser
Its library is enormous, and if you would rather not install anything at all, it is the one to try.
- SuperCook shows only recipes that use ingredients you already have. You build its pantry from a list of more than 2,000 ingredients, and its listing puts the library at over 11 million recipes.14
- It runs at supercook.com in a browser, with nothing to install.12
- SuperCook’s Android app was last updated on October 16, 2025, and its iPhone app on June 15, 2022.14,15
- It is far more established: 21,790 ratings on the App Store and 1M+ downloads on Google Play.14,15
- Falls short
- You build its pantry by ticking items off a long list of ingredients.
Why some familiar names are missing
- Mealime
- Mealime, the weekly meal-plan app, says it will be discontinued as of October 21, 2026, and is moving its users to Meals Hub inside Albertsons Companies grocery apps.19 If you are moving off Mealime, start here.
How we ranked
- First, how well an app answers what to cook; then, how much it gives away free; then, how recently it shipped an update.
- Every app here had shipped an update to at least one app store in the last twelve months, or runs on a website we could load, on the day we checked.
- We read each app’s own website and store listings on October 5, 2026, and every claim links to the source it came from.
